Mobile roaming charges face an immediate hike if there is a No Deal Brexit, the government has confirmed.
Tory ministers are revoking the EU law which guarantees UK citizens pay the same for using their phone on the Continent as they do at home. The current system caps the costs charged between EU and UK phone operators, letting them pass on the savings to customers. But the Mobile Roaming (EU Exit) Regulations admit these caps will have no legal force if there is no Brexit deal. That means phone giants could see their wholesale costs spiral, making roaming packages unaffordable and forcing them to push up costs, the government warns. Under the new rules, customers will still be prompted once they've spent £45 to prevent massive accidental bills.
